In a candid trip down memory lane, Bollywood actor Bobby Deol recently opened up about his early days in the film industry, sharing some amusing behind-the-scenes stories from his most famous 1990s projects. Among his revelations, the actor recalled a specific incident where a sudden burst of strong food odors disrupted an intimate musical sequence with his co-star, Manisha Koirala, leading to a rather uncomfortable moment on set. The incident took place during the shooting of the 1997 psychological suspense thriller Gupt: The Hidden Truth, directed by Rajiv Rai, which also starred Kajol. The film was a massive commercial success and is fondly remembered for its hit soundtrack. However, while filming the romantic song Bechaniyaan, Deol found himself facing an unexpected challenge during a close-up romantic shot. According to Deol, the weather was quite chilly at the outdoor shooting location, and a local street food vendor happened to be nearby selling chana zor garam, a popular spicy chickpea snack heavily garnished with raw onions. Koirala, enjoying the warm snack between takes, ate it with great pleasure right before the cameras were set to roll for their next sequence. The upcoming shot required a high level of physical closeness, specifically involving a moment where Koirala’s character was scripted to playfully bite Deol on the chin. As she stepped in close for the romantic cue, Deol was caught completely off guard by a strong scent of raw onions. He admitted that the sudden, overwhelming odor made it incredibly difficult to maintain a romantic expression, jokingly stating that romance was the absolute last thing on his mind at that moment. Determined to get a bit of playful revenge on his co-star for the pungent experience, Deol decided to orchestrate a lighthearted prank later that day. During a separate sequence filmed inside a college setting, Koirala’s character had a brother who was played by a newcomer to the industry. Seizing the opportunity, Deol and the stunt coordinator mischievously convinced the young actor that eating raw onions would dramatically improve his internal focus and help him deliver a more emotionally charged performance. The newcomer fell for the trick and consumed a large amount of onions before shooting a highly energetic confrontation scene where he had to get close and scream at Koirala. Deol admitted he waited eagerly on the sidelines to see her reaction, but to his disappointment, Koirala remained entirely unfazed and didn’t react to the odor at all, causing his prank to fall flat. Reflecting on the memory with a laugh, Deol chalked up the entire chain of events to the harmless immaturity of youth. The actor also used the opportunity to address his broader reputation for playfully bickering with his female co-stars during that era. He fondly reminisced about his frequent arguments with Twinkle Khanna during his debut film Barsaat, noting how his constant complaints about a sensitive childhood stomach used to deeply annoy her. He also looked back on his close friendship with Rani Mukerji during the filming of Bichhoo, explaining how a loud disagreement over whose hair should blow in the wind during a river raft scene ultimately cemented a lifelong bond between them. On the professional front, Bobby Deol is currently experiencing a major career resurgence following his highly praised performance in the action-drama Animal. The actor is now gearing up for the theatrical release of his next major project, an action-thriller titled Bandar, directed by Anurag Kashyap. Additionally, he is set to appear later this year alongside Alia Bhatt and Sharvari in the high-profile spy universe feature Alpha.
