Actor Dia Mirza and Sonakshi Sinha have come out in support of education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk after Delhi Police shifted him from the protest site at Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday due to concerns over his deteriorating health. Wangchuk had been on an indefinite hunger strike for nearly three weeks, and the police said the decision to move him to the hospital was taken following medical advice and directions from the Delhi High Court to ensure his health was protected. Dia Mirza expressed her solidarity with Wangchuk and the students participating in the movement through a heartfelt post on social media. She wrote that she stood with the students of the country and supported their constitutional right to peaceful protest. She also backed their demands for accountability, transparency and reforms in the education system. Addressing Wangchuk and fellow protesters Neha, Ameen and Manish directly, Dia wrote, “I hear you, I see you, I stand by you.” She further said she supported Sonam Wangchuk’s appeal for dialogue and his right to continue a peaceful protest, making it clear that her support was for the students’ concerns and the need for constructive conversations rather than political affiliations. Sonakshi Sinha also continued to raise her voice in support of Wangchuk after he was taken to the hospital. In a video shared on her social media, the actress said what happened with Wangchuk was not right but she was relieved to know that he was conscious and with his wife. She praised the students and supporters for maintaining peace despite the difficult situation and urged everyone participating in the planned march to continue protesting peacefully. Sonakshi added that in a democracy, every voice deserves to be respected and hoped that meaningful dialogue would begin soon. Wangchuk was admitted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital early on Saturday after police removed him from the protest site. According to the hospital, he was weak because of prolonged fasting and dehydration but remained stable. Doctors said he required continuous monitoring and treatment to restore his body’s health parameters. Reports also stated that Wangchuk refused intravenous fluids and other medical treatment despite doctors warning that his condition could worsen after more than 20 days without food. His personal doctors had earlier expressed concerns about dehydration, weight loss and the risk of serious complications, including dangerously low potassium levels that could affect vital organs. Delhi Police said the decision to remove Wangchuk from the protest site was made in compliance with the Delhi High Court’s directions and on expert medical advice after his health deteriorated. The High Court had earlier directed authorities to conduct daily medical examinations and ensure timely intervention if his life was at risk. Police maintained that the move was aimed solely at protecting his health, although supporters alleged that he was taken away against his wishes. Sonam Wangchuk had started his indefinite hunger strike on June 28 in support of the youth-led Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest. The movement was launched to demand accountability over the alleged NEET-UG examination paper leak, a judicial probe into examination-related irregularities and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Wangchuk said he joined the hunger strike to stand with students seeking transparency and fairness in India’s education system. Even after his hospitalisation, organisers announced that the protest would continue, with a planned march to Parliament remaining on schedule. The support from Dia Mirza and Sonakshi Sinha has added to the growing list of public figures who have spoken in favour of Wangchuk’s peaceful protest. Several actors and personalities have urged the government to open a dialogue with him, expressing concern over his health while also emphasising the importance of listening to the voices of students demanding reforms.
