Aamir Khan addresses the controversy surrounding his third marriage.

Aamir Khan Responds to Love Jihad Allegations

Actor Aamir Khan has finally reacted to the controversy surrounding his third marriage to Gauri Spratt after some political leaders and social media users linked it to “love jihad.” In an interview with Rediff, the actor firmly dismissed the allegations and said his family has always believed in inclusivity, where people from different faiths have come together through marriage without religious conversion. He stated that both his sisters are married to Hindu men, his daughter Ira Khan is married to a Hindu, and his cousin Mansoor Khan is married to a Christian. Aamir also clarified that neither Gauri Spratt nor his former wives, Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao, converted to Islam to marry him because all three marriages were civil marriages. He further revealed that Gauri is a Christian and not even a practising Christian, adding that “life is getting more comical as time passes.”

Political Remarks Spark Fresh Controversy

The debate surrounding Aamir Khan’s marriage intensified after Maharashtra ministers Nitesh Rane and Sanjay Shirsat criticised his personal life. The leaders questioned the message celebrities send through their marriages, with Shirsat even describing the actor as a possible “brand ambassador of love jihad.” Their remarks quickly went viral and triggered widespread discussions on social media, bringing Aamir’s personal life back into the national spotlight.

Maulana Ibrahim Hussain Issues Fatwa

The controversy grew further after Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, issued a fatwa against Aamir Khan’s marriage to Gauri Spratt. According to the cleric, under his interpretation of Sharia, a Muslim man is not permitted to marry a non-Muslim woman unless she embraces Islam. He described such marriages as being “against Sharia” and claimed they tarnish the image of Islam. Hussain said he had issued the fatwa based on his interpretation of the Quran, calling such marriages unlawful and urging those who enter into them to repent before Allah. He also argued that when prominent Muslims act against what he considers Islamic teachings, it creates confusion about Islam and Sharia among both Muslims and non-Muslims. The cleric further remarked that repeatedly marrying after divorce without being able to fulfil the responsibilities of marriage is also not justified.

Aamir Khan’s Marriage to Gauri Spratt

Aamir Khan married Gauri Spratt in an intimate ceremony at his Mumbai residence on July 5, attended by around 150 close friends and family members. Before marrying Gauri, the actor was married to Reena Dutta, with whom he has two children, Junaid and Ira Khan. He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao, and the two share a son, Azad. Although Aamir and Kiran separated in 2021, they continue to co-parent their son and have maintained a cordial relationship. Aamir and Gauri have reportedly known each other for nearly 25 years but reconnected a little over two years ago before beginning their relationship. The actor had introduced Gauri publicly during his 60th birthday celebrations earlier this year before the couple tied the knot.

Aamir Stands by Inclusivity

Through his latest remarks, Aamir Khan has made it clear that none of his marriages involved religious conversion and that his family’s long history of interfaith relationships reflects the values they have always followed. Rather than engaging in a political argument, the actor reiterated that his marriages have been based on mutual respect, personal choice and inclusivity. His clarification serves as his direct response to the allegations surrounding his third marriage, while the debate over his comments and the reactions to his marriage continues.
