KASHISH Pride Film Festival 2026 Launches In Mumbai With Vibrant Opening Ceremony Honouring Actor Konkona Sensharma

A major emotional highlight of the grand evening was the presentation of the coveted Rainbow Voices Award to the highly acclaimed actor and director Konkona Sensharma. The special honor, presented by noted filmmaker-archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, was bestowed upon her to recognize her exceptionally sensitive, authentic, and nuanced portrayals of queer characters across various groundbreaking projects like Monsoon Date, Geeli Puchi, and the recent 2026 release Accused. Accepting the recognition with immense humility, Konkona gave a deeply vulnerable speech about the massive artistic responsibility of representing the community honestly on screen. She candidly shared that the path to embracing pride is often highly complicated and routed through complex layers of personal identity, making this recognition from within the community incredibly meaningful to her. She noted that while actors play countless parts throughout their professional careers, some beautiful characters possess such poignant depth that they stay inside an artist’s heart forever.

The opening ceremony also celebrated broader community initiatives, presenting the Rainbow Champion Award to the Aravani Art Project, a phenomenal transgender-led collective that has gained nationwide recognition for reclaiming public urban spaces through striking street murals and community art. Actor Parvathy Thiruvothu presented the trophy, highly praising the collective for successfully bringing transgender voices and creative expressions directly into mainstream public visibility across Indian cities. Adding a wave of creative excitement for future storytelling, the festival trust officially announced the winners of the KASHISH QDrishti Film Grant 2026 to support independent voices, presenting a production grant of four lakh rupees to Simrat Harvind Kaur for her upcoming project Vasso’n Bahr, alongside development grants to filmmakers Negha Shahin and Guntaj Deep Singh.

The launch event concluded on a highly energetic note with spectacular cultural performances, featuring a powerful Kathak Tandav presentation by artist Avenev and his team, followed by a high-octane traditional Lavani dance performance by actor Aditi Bhagwat and her talented troupe. Running smoothly across iconic Mumbai venues including Liberty Cinema, the Alliance Française de Bombay, and the National Gallery of Modern Art, the 2026 edition of the festival is scheduled to showcase an impressive lineup of over one hundred and fifty films sourced from forty-three different countries. Despite facing severe financial constraints due to shifting international funding policies, the festival continues to stand as a resilient beacon of hope, bringing people together through panel discussions, masterclasses, and global queer cinema masterpieces to advocate for universal empathy and structural equality.
