Prime Video’s upcoming original film Phoolan is all set to make its world premiere at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The much-awaited Hindi-language film has been selected under the prestigious Special Presentations section and will be screened on September 16, 2026, at the Princess of Wales Theatre during the globally celebrated film festival. The selection marks a major milestone for the project as it becomes one of the Indian films representing the country on an international stage before its streaming release on Prime Video. Inspired by Phoolan Devi’s Autobiography Phoolan is inspired by the 1997 autobiography I, Phoolan: The Autobiography of India’s Bandit Queen, written by Phoolan Devi with Marie-Thérèse Cuny and Paul Rambali. Rather than covering her entire life, the film focuses on one of the most defining chapters of her journey. Set in the heartland of India, the story follows a young 17-year-old Phoolan Devi as she faces a brutal 48-hour siege in which more than 2,000 armed men surround a village in an attempt to eliminate her. The film promises an intense and emotional narrative that explores courage, survival and resilience while presenting one of the most dramatic episodes from the life of the legendary Bandit Queen. Cast and Crew of Phoolan The film features Sneha Kumari in the lead role as Phoolan Devi. She is joined by Anurag Thakur, Vikram Pratap Singh, Aakash Dahiya, Prateek Pachori and Dev Dutt Budholiya, all of whom play pivotal roles in the story. The project has been written and directed by Richie Mehta, the International Emmy-winning filmmaker best known for creating Delhi Crime. Phoolan is produced by Shareen Mantri Kedia, Kishor Arora, Kanwal Kohli and Richie Mehta under the banner of Namah Pictures. The film is a Prime Video Original and will stream on the platform following its festival run. A Major International Platform for the Film The Toronto International Film Festival is regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals and has often served as a launchpad for critically acclaimed international cinema. The inclusion of Phoolan in the Special Presentations lineup reflects the confidence that the festival programmers have in Richie Mehta’s storytelling. The film’s world premiere on September 16, 2026, is expected to draw significant attention from international audiences, critics and industry professionals before it reaches viewers worldwide on Prime Video. Expectations Ahead of the Premiere With Richie Mehta returning to a powerful real-life story after earning global acclaim for Delhi Crime, expectations from Phoolan are already high. The first look and official details suggest that the film aims to present a gripping, character-driven account of Phoolan Devi’s life while focusing on one extraordinary incident that shaped her legacy. Backed by Prime Video and Namah Pictures, the film is expected to be one of the most talked-about Indian premieres at TIFF 2026, further strengthening India’s presence on the international festival circuit.
